It's a remarkable feat that Trotsky managed to write such a captivating book on a topic which can hardly be called exhilarating. The early life of Lenin (when looked from the outside) is rather bland, especially when compared to his later years. Still, TYL is a truly magnificent book where biography and history blend into each other. It will not only give you an insight into the psychology of a man whose contribution to the course of history is enormous, but it will also offer you a glimpse into the cultural, political, and economic changes of 19th century Russia.
Of course Trotsky can hardly be expected to give an impartial judgment of Lenin's character, but it speaks to his credit that he warns against myth-making. Extraordinary as Lenin may have been, his capabilities were still very much the result of hard work and sacrifice, and his personality was not without flaws.
Regardless of how strongly we should condemn the horrors of the Soviet-Union, the individual that is Lenin was a fascinating man whose drive and self-discipline are worthy of praise.
