There seems to be littlepointto this exercise in a volumedesignedforinternationalconsumption.Itbeginsto look more andmoreas if thepublishersof the seriestowhich thepresentworkbelongshave notreallythoughtthroughthe fundamentalprinciplesof theenterprise.Scholarsand students whoareable toappreciateargumentsthatmakeampleuse ofGreek, Latin,and(inthiscase)Hebrew sourcesintheoriginalwillcer-tainlybeequippedto read themajormodernlanguagesof thediscipline.Ithasalwaysseemedodd that theWissenschaftlicheBuchgesellschafthasneverrecognizedthatitcouldprovidea far more usefulproductifitlocated translators forpaperswritten in less familiarlanguagesandsimplyleftthoseinEnglishand theRomancelanguagesintheiroriginalstate. Itisgoodtohave Kent'simportantarticle onthe Julianiccoinageavailablehere,butitscarcelyneededto beputintoGerman. On the otherhand,animmenselyvaluable contributiononJulianandtheJews byH.J.Lewy-atthispointinthehistoryof Julianicresearch far more worthhav-ingthan Adler'spiecefrom 1893-hasbeenomitted.Lewy'swork isavailableonlyin modern Hebrew(inhis 'OlamotNifgashim),and accord-inglya German translationwouldhave beenhighlydesirable. Instead wehave Adler's excellent but ancientstudy laboriouslyturned into Germanandprintedwith extensivequotationsinHebrew that is untranslated.This makes nosenseat all.
